What is an Allergy?

Presenting allergy information begins with a first step. And that first step is "what is an allergy?"
'An allergy' according to the online encyclopedia, Wikipedia, 'is an immune system malfunction whereby a person's body is hypersensitised to react immunologically to typically nonimmunogenic substances. When a person is hypersensitised, these substances are known as allergens. The word allergy derives from the Greek words allos meaning "other" and ergon meaning "reaction" or "reactivity".' | What? Basically, an allergy is an unusual sensitity that to a certain thing. That thing may be foods, pollens, insect bites, chemicals, medications, etc. When an allergy is triggered our immune system, which normally wards off unwanted foreign substances in our bodies like parasites, bacteria, and dirt, mistakenly identifies common harmless objects as something it must destroy. It then releases antibodies that cause bodily symptoms.
If you have allergies then you don't need me to tell you what they are. If you don't have allergies, then count your blessings. My sister has severe allergies and has to get weekly shots. I myself never had any type of allergy ... until fall of 2005 (when I was 44). I will spare you the ugly details and will leave it as 'after about 8 visits to the doctor (and the 50 shot allergy test) I found out that I was allergic to cats and dogs'.
Now we have 2 cats and 2 dogs and have had animals for 20 years. My doctor explained pet allergies to me as filling a glass drop by drop. Eventually it just overflows.
So, I am one of as many as 50 million Americans who are estimated to have allergies. There is no clear medical reason why people contract allergies. One thing is certain: allergies do not discriminate. Regardless of age, gender, or race allergies are a fact of life.
P.S. New information about allergies, allergy treatments and allergy studies are happening all the time. Please forward any information and its source that you would like to pass on. Thanks and breathe easy!
